Mythical Beasts:Stag
White stag in medieval times was a Christ symbol. The antlers of the stag came to represent regeneration, in that they would grow back when they broke off. The white stag often appears in the forests around King Arthur's court, sending the knights off on to adventures*.In the final section of The Story of King Arthur and His Knights, there an adventure for the hunting and killing of a white stag. The adventure threatens to take King Arthur’s life, but he ends up succeeding with help from an old woman.
To the Celtic people, from Medieval Europe, white stags were messengers from the Otherworld (equivalent to the Greek's Mt. Olympus). (C. S. Lewis uses this legend at both the beginning and end of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.)
*The white stag, across most of the white stag myths, had the ability to evade capture.
