The Griffin is known to have the head and wings of an eagle, the body of a lion, and the tail of a serpent or a lion . The griffin has a particularly long history. In about 2000 BC people in western Asia began using griffins in art. Figures of griffins later appeared on pottery, metalwork, and buildings of ancient Greece.Over time, the symbol of the griffin has been used in different ways. In ancient Rome, griffins were carved on tombs to guard the dead. During the Middle Ages, griffins appeared on shields and other armor as symbols of strength.
