Manuscripts were illuminated pages, which were heavily decorated with precious metals and other opulent materials. They were usually decorated, because important content lied in them. Making a manuscript involved a lot of steps:
1. Make the parchment out of animal (sheep, goats, calves).
2. Preparing for use in a book by folding, cutting, etc.
3. Scribes used quills (from feathers) and ink (from gallnuts) to write in the pages.
4. An illuminator decorated the pages.
